Lafayette Square was so named in 1837 in grateful recognition of
the aid given the colonists by Gilbert Motier, Marquis de
Lafayette, "The Friend of Washington".
The centerpiece of the square is a
three-tiered fountain cast in Alabama and erected in 1983 in
commemoration of the State of Georgia's 250th anniversary.
In 1993 a sundial was placed in Lafayette Square by the NSCDA in
Georgia in honor of their Society's 100th birthday
celebration. The seal of the Georgia Society (the
Franklinia Alatamaha) is featured on the sundial which sits on a
fluted pedestal base with an acanthus leaf capitol.
